Building Engagement Around a Strategic Plan

UCSF’s Benioff Children’s Hospital was getting ready to launch a new strategic plan and wanted to communicate the plan in an engaging way to everyone in the hospital system. “How can we ensure that everyone, from nurses to medical directors, understands the plan and sees how their work contributes to our priorities?” they asked.

We worked with BCH to create a friendly, inspirational illustration that highlighted the vision and three strategic priorities.

To build awareness of the strategic plan and gather feedback from stakeholders, we designed and facilitated feedback sessions hosted by senior leaders before finalizing the graphic.

Once the illustration was finalized, we supported the hospital-wide roll-out of the strategic plan with:

  • Live graphic recording at a series of town halls

  • An animated video

  • Additional videos of physicians talking about the importance of the strategic priorities

  • “Action postcards” that helped staff identify specific actions they would take to support the plan

  • Materials for a manager’s toolkit to help managers have guided, effective conversations with their teams about the strategic plan

The BCH team received great feedback on the communication roll-out, and awareness and engagement around the strategic plan exceeded their expectations. BCH continues to be a leader to innovative, equitable healthcare for children in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
