Last week I had the opportunity to do graphic recording at the Summit to Reconnect Learning (organized by the Sprout Fund, Macarthur Foundation and Mozilla), a gathering of people thinking about how to create and deploy open badges for learning. This event was so much fun for me because in addition to the large-scale graphic recording I usually do on paper during the plenary sessions, I also did digital graphic recording during the working group portion of the day. And, to top off the visual fun, I got to host a Doodle Desk on Day 2, where people could come up and have their freshly minted idea visualized by your truly.

Here are few of my favorites from the day:
The Doodle Desk!
The Doodle Desk was the highlight of the event for me because of the participants’ enthusiasm for having their budding ideas visualized and their heartfelt appreciation for being able to hold their idea in their hands after we worked together for 10-15 minutes. Here I am with a couple of happy customers:
You get a better sense the visual simplicity of the graphics in this close-up:
My “visual consultations” were fairly short and sweet with each participant. I intuitively worked through this list of questions with each of them to arrive at the graphic and did a short sketch in pencil as we talked before committing to ink:
- What’s the idea you’d like to sketch out together?
- What’s the core message you’d like to make sure we capture?
- Who is the audience for this graphic?
- What’s the title of this graphic?
- What are the colors of your logo you might want to incorporate?
- Anything else we’re missing?
There was a long line at the desk, and not everyone got their visual consult I’m afraid, but those that did were so grateful I was quite humbled by their appreciation and excitement. Hoping those “doodles” are helping further some great ideas after the Summit!
